It is a slow-growing, medium-sized evergreen tree with a spreading crown; it usually grows up to 25 metres tall, occasionally to 35 metres.
The oil from its seed is traded internationally as tamanu oil or foraha oil.
It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 28 – 35°c, but can tolerate 10 – 42°c.
It can be killed by temperatures of -1°c or lower.
