Description
During flowering season, the tree sheds its leaves and produces abundant vibrant red flowers covering the whole crown, which resembles a tree on fire.
This deciduous tree has grey fissured bark, leaves are simple or shallowly often 3-lobed margins.
Flowers are in large panicles, bright red 1-2 cm long, waxy surface, the follicles are dark brown to 10 cm long on stalks to 8 cm long.
It is found in rain forest areas along the east coast of Australia.
Usually grows up to 20 m tall but in good conditions it may be up to 40 m tall.
It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 26 – 32°c, but can tolerate 10 – 36°c
The plant is relatively hardy when dormant, tolerating occasional short-lived lows to about -5°c, although young new growth can be killed at 0°c.
It the tree is damaged by frost then, so long as the damage is not too severe, it usually recovers well.
