Description
Spreading, ornamental shade tree, with dense foliage and globular deep-purple fruit to 5cm edible when completely ripe but very sour, which makes an excellent jam, and also attracts birds, ripens in winter. Hardy.
Fruits depressed-obovoid, about 20-25 x 20-38 mm.
Endocarp hard and woody, about 1.8-2.5 x 2-3.5 cm.
The deep purple, fleshy, plum-like fruits need to be held for some days to soften and mellow before eating.
The remains of these fruit are found below the tree, the hard endocarp, that surrounds the seeds, has small openings almost like elongated miniature port-holes.
The Burdekin plum is exceptionally hardy and can cope with long dry periods once it is established.
It does however prefer free draining soil and lots of sunshine to perform well.
Altitudinal range from near sea level to 1000 m.
Grows in drier rain forest and monsoon forest.
