Description
Adenia heterophylla (Lacewing vine) is a fast-growing Australian native climbing vine found naturally in the rainforests and vine forests of North Queensland. It features attractive glossy green foliage, delicate creamy-green flowers and striking orange to red fruits that add seasonal interest while attracting native birds and other wildlife. Thriving in tropical and subtropical climates, this vigorous climber is ideal for covering fences, trellises, pergolas and arbours, making it an excellent choice for native gardens, rainforest plantings, habitat restoration and screening.
Adenia heterophylla produces glossy green leaves that vary in shape, giving the vine its name “heterophylla,” meaning “different leaves.” The lush foliage creates a dense, attractive cover, making it ideal for screening and adding greenery to vertical spaces.
Small clusters of delicate creamy-green to pale yellow flowers appear during the warmer months. While modest in size, the flowers attract a range of native pollinators, including bees and insects, contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem.
Following flowering, the vine develops eye-catching rounded fruits that ripen from green to vibrant orange or bright red. These colourful fruits provide ornamental appeal and are a valuable food source for native birds and other wildlife. Note: Although attractive, the fruit should not be consumed by humans.
